External Retaining Rings

External Retaining Rings are axially assembled onto shafts. Lug holes and retaining ring pliers (see separate listing) simplify installation and removal—the rings expand to pass over the shaft when opened by the pliers. They make nearly 360 degree contact with a machined groove in the shaft when released by the pliers. External Retaining Rings accommodate higher thrust loadings and provide a larger protruding shoulder than radially assembled retaining rings such as C and E styles. Ring size refers to shaft diameter, which is larger than the ring's free diameter. See our External Retaining Ring Specifications reference charts.
