DIN 982 Heavy Nylon Insert Hex Lock Nuts with internal machine screw threads are a "heavy" pattern version of what may be called "regular" nylon insert lock nuts. Although the width across flats (wrench size) is the same, these nuts have an increased height (also referred to as thickness) of usually 1.5 to 2 mm (as little as 1.3 and as much as 4 mm, depending on size) to improve wrenching. Consequently, they are referred to as "high type." The captive undersized nylon (polyamide) washer creates a gas and moisture seal and a useful prevailing torque that resists loosening, but the non-metallic insert does have chemical and temperature limitations. Also, the additional friction the washer creates with the mating threads may cause galling when stainless steel nuts are used (steel nuts should not be affected). Although the washer mostly returns to its original size when the nut is removed, reuse is still limited. They are always installed one way—the nylon insert threads on last. Steel nuts are available in Class 8 and 10; stainless steel in A2 and A4. Steel nuts are zinc plated. Threads include coarse, fine and extra fine; tolerance is 6H; right-hand threads are standard. Select a nut strength grade (Class) that equals or exceeds that of the screw. DIN 985 is the "regular" or "thin type" version of DIN 982 Heavy Nylon Insert Hex Lock Nuts.
