METRIC INSERTS, Threaded

Inserts, Threaded

Threaded InsertManufactured in the USA by AVK Industrial Products, the A-L Series Insert offers superior strength characteristics and features a knurled body and a large diameter, low profile head. This makes it ideal for use in either drilled or punched holes. It is designed to be used with Metric Class 8.8/9.8 mating screws.

The A-T Series Insert is designed to be installed into virtually any material greater than 0.76 mm in thickness. Designed for use with Metric Class 12.9 mating screws, the threaded portion of the A-T insert, as it is installed, is completely swaged 360 degrees into the sleeve portion and the hole.

METRIC NUTS

Coupling Nuts

Also Called: Extension Nuts, Rod Coupling Nuts, Spacers

Coupling NutFully threaded Coupling Nuts are used with hanger screws, threaded rod and threaded studs. Use to extend length, in spacing applications or as leveling feet.

Flange Nuts

Flange NutFlange Nuts are hex nuts with a circular base that flares out from their bottom. The large bearing surface, created by the flange, better distributes the load and allows it to span larger holes than a standard hex nut.

Hex Nuts

These Hex Nuts are available unplated (Plain Finish) and Zinc Plated and in Stainless Steel. Choose from Class 8 or 10.

Jam Nuts

Also Called: Half Height Nuts, Hex Thin Jam Nuts

Jam NutThinner than "regular" nuts, Jam Nuts derive their name from being "jammed" against another nut to prevent it from coming loose. When the word "heavy" appears in the description, they offer the same width (and bearing surface) as heavy hex nuts, but are shorter in height.

Machine Screw Hex Nuts

Machine Screw NutMachine Screw Hex Nuts range in size from M2 to M10 and are commonly used with machine screws. They have flat tops and bottoms with beveled (chamfered) edges.

Nylon Insert Lock Nuts

Also Called: ESNA Lock Nuts

Nylon Insert Lock NutNylon Insert Lock Nuts have a captive undersized nylon washer that creates friction with the mating threads to prevent loosening. They are temperature limited and may not be used with certain chemicals, but because the nylon washer element tightly conforms to the mating threads, it provides an effective seal. Nylon Insert Lock Nuts are reusable.

Prevailing Torque Lock Nuts

Also Called: All Steel Lock Nuts

Prevailing Torque Lock NutPrevailing Torque Lock Nuts use a form of interference to create friction with the mating threads. That friction resists loosening caused by shock, vibration and other dynamic forces. All Metal Prevailing Torque Lock Nuts do not have the temperature or chemical limitations like Nylon Insert Lock Nuts.

Wing Nuts

Wing NutTheir name alone accurately describes these nuts--Wing Nuts are nuts with wings. The wings allow you to tighten and loosen the nut using your fingers, making them similar to Thumb Screws. They're ideal in situations requiring frequent adjustment or disassembly.

METRIC PINS

Cotter Pins

Cotter PinCotter Pins are manufactured with one prong slightly longer than the other. This feature makes them easy to open. They are used with drilled shafts, clevis pins, and slotted nuts and castle nuts. Measure length from under the head to the end of the short prong.

Dowel Pins

Dowel PinDowel PinDowel Pins are used as guide pins, hinges, shafts, stops and wrist pins. They are also used for aligning parts, in assembly work as feeler gauges, as valves and valve plungers on hydraulic equipment, as roller bearings in truck wheels and casters, in many production operations as plug gauges, as position locators on indexing machines, and as fasteners for machine parts and laminated sections. Pull-Out Dowel Pins are designed for use in blind holes.

Spring Pins

Also Called: C Pins, Expansion Pins, Roll Pins, Slotted Spring Pins, Split Pins, Spring Dowel Pins, Tension Pins

Spring PinSpring Pins align and hold parts in position. Ends are beveled (chamfered) to simplify insertion.

METRIC RINGS

Retaining Rings

Also Called: C Clips, C Retaining Rings, E Clips, E Retaining Rings, External Retaining Rings, Internal Retaining Rings

Retaining RingRetaining RingUse retaining ring pliers (see separate listing) to install External Retaining Rings--the rings expand to pass over the shaft when opened by the pliers. They seat into a groove in the shaft when released by the pliers.

External C Retaining Rings are ideal in low-clearance situations especially where exposed tabs are neither required nor desirable. They snap into a groove in the shaft from the side.

External E Retaining Rings have a larger profile than C Retaining Rings. They are also installed by snapping them into a grooved shaft from the side.

Internal Retaining Rings are compressed to fit inside a housing or bore using retaining ring pliers (see separate listing). When the pressure is released, the rings expand and lock into a groove.

METRIC RODS

Drill Rods

Drill RodDrill Rods are accurate in size and supplied finished and ready to use. Drill rod material is frequently used for dowel pins, punches, roller bearings, shafts, pins, plugs, tools, etc. Available in two types: water hardened and oil hardened. Water hardened, which you heat then quench (cool) in water, works well in maintenance applications without heat treating. Oil hardened, which you quench in oil after heating, offers toughness, machinability and abrasion resistance. Because oil cools more slowly than water, deformation caused by quenching of Oil Hardened Drill Rod is minimal compared to Water Hardened Drill Rod. Consequently, use oil hardened for complex and other critical parts.

Threaded Rod

Also Called: All Thread

Threaded RodThreaded Rods are sometimes confused with threaded studs. The difference is that, when measured end-to-end, threaded studs are normally found in lengths of less than 100 millimeters, while threaded rods are often 1 meter in length.

METRIC SCREWS

Cap Screws (Hex Head)

Also Called: Hex Bolts, Tap Bolts (when fully threaded), Machine Bolts

Hex Head Cap ScrewMetric Cap Screws commonly range from M3 to M30 and have a Hex head. DIN 931 and DIN 960 are partially threaded, and DIN 933 and DIN 961 are fully threaded. Measure length from under the head.

Flange Screws

Flange ScrewHex Flange Head Screws allow a greater distribution of the load due to their large bearing surface head design. Also use them with irregular and oversized holes. Measure the length from under the flange to the tip.

Machine Screws

Machine ScrewMachine ScrewMachine Screws, which are seldom--if ever--known by any other name, commonly range in size from M2 (small) to M10. They are available in Slotted and Phillips drive styles; Cheese, Flat, Oval and Pan head styles; and in Plated Steel and A2 Stainless Steel. For Cheese and Pan heads, measure length from under the head. For Flat and Oval heads, length includes head height.

Set Screws

Set ScrewSet Screws are used for locating and fastening knobs, gears, collars and other devices onto shafts. In all cases, measure length from end to end.

Shoulder Screws

Also Called: Stripper Bolts

Shoulder ScrewShoulder Screws have a cylindrical head, a smooth cylindrical shoulder and a short threaded section. A small area between the threads and shoulder is undercut, which allows for a tight fit against a mating surface. Used as a bearing or spacer, their applications number many: as shafts for cam rolls and other rotating parts, as pivots and stud bolts, and as bearing pins for swing arms, links and levers. Often combined with bronze sleeve (Oilite) bearings, they are also used as a guide in blanking and forming presses and in punch and die operations.

Size is specified as Shoulder Diameter (millimeters) x Shoulder Length (millimeters) x Thread Diameter (millimeters) - Thread Pitch (millimeters). Hex Key size is half of Shoulder Diameter--for 6 mm Shoulder Diameter, use a 3 mm Hex Key; for 8 mm use a 4 mm Key; for 10 mm use a 5 mm Key; for 12 mm use a 6 mm Key; for 16 mm use an 8 mm Key; and for 20 mm use a 10 mm Key.

Socket Head Cap Screws

Cap ScrewCap ScrewHex drive Socket Cap Screws are often found in applications where there is insufficient wrench/socket clearance for hex head cap screws, or when a "finished" look is desired. Button heads provide a larger bearing surface and a lower head profile than Socket heads, and are used when the material is too thin to countersink. Because of their smaller outer diameter, Socket Head screws may be preferred and are sometimes recessed (counterbored). When clearance is an issue, use a Low Socket Head instead of a Socket Head. Socket Head screws are recommended for high strength applications; Button and Flat heads are suggested when only moderate strength is needed. For Button and Socket heads, measure length from under the head. For Flat heads, length includes head height.

METRIC TOOLS

Hex Keys

Also Called: Hexagon Key, Hex Wrench, Allen Key, Allen Wrench

Metric Hex KeyMetric Hex Key"L" shaped hex keys, available in short and long arm versions, are used with Hex Socket, Button and Flat Head Cap Screws and Hex Set Screws. Ball End Hex Keys have ball and standard arms: the long ball arm can be used at angles up to 30 degrees, but when maximum torque is required, use the non-ball short arm. T-Handle Hex keys are preferred when maximum driving power is needed or when "L" hex keys can't be used because of obstructions. Hex Bits are used with power drivers. Torx keys are similar to hex keys, but grooves in the key mate with teeth in the screw head to prevent slipping. Hex keys and Torx keys are not interchangeable. Available in inch and metric sizes.

METRIC WASHERS

Flat Washers

Also Called: Washers

Flat WasherFlat Washers provide spacing and an increased bearing surface. DIN 125A washers do not have a chamfer (a beveled edge), whereas DIN 125B are chamfered.

Hi-Collar Lock Washers

Also Called: High Collar Lock Washers, High Collar Spring Lock Washers, Spring Washers

Hi-Collar Lock WasherThese lock washers fit in space-limited areas due to their small outside diameter (OD). Designed for use with smaller head screws like socket head cap screws, Hi-Collar Lock Washers have increased thickness to preserve their locking ability.

Split Lock Washers

Also Called: Spring Washers, Split Ring Lock Washers

Split Lock WasherThese washers, placed under the nut or screw head, compress as the fastener is tightened and the spring-back tension resists loosening. Also, because of their spring-like take-up action, Split Lock Washers can compensate for slight material wear.

Tooth Lock Washers, External

Also Called: External Lock Washers, External Tooth Washers

External Tooth Lock WasherExternal Tooth Lock Washers create a ratchet action by biting into the nut or screw head and the surface it contacts. When used under a screw head, the "external" type require a large head--like Binding, Pan or Round--because the washer teeth must make contact with the head. Since the teeth are on the largest radius, which results in greater twisting resistance, this type is preferred when the greatest locking power is desired.

Tooth Lock Washers, Internal

Also Called: Internal Lock Washers, Internal Tooth Washers

Internal Tooth Lock WasherInternal Tooth Lock Washers create a ratchet action by biting into the nut or screw head and the surface it contacts. The "internal" type work best with small screw heads, such as Fillister, and when the teeth--and the surface marks they create--need to be hidden for appearance reasons. Because the teeth must make contact with the mating surface, do not use with oversized holes.
